* WHAT…Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12
inches, with locally 1 to 2 feet along the ridgetops. Winds may
gust as high as 50 mph Friday afternoon into Friday night.
* WHERE…In Virginia, Western Highland County. In West Virginia,
Western Grant and Western Pendleton Counties.
* WHEN…Until 6 AM EST Saturday. Bursts of moderate to heavy snow
will impact this evening’s commute while temperatures fall well
below freezing. The most widespread and heaviest snow will be late
Friday morning through Friday evening with peak snowfall rates
around 1 to 2 inches per hour. The strong winds will coincide with
the heavy snow, making the Friday evening commute very dangerous
due to snow covered surfaces and visibility below 1/4 mile at
times.
* IMPACTS…Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will
likely become slick and hazardous. Visibilities may drop below 1/4
mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are
expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially
life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult to impossible.
The hazardous conditions could impact the commutes through Friday
evening. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Near blizzard conditions are possible Friday.
Snow may transition to a period of freezing rain or drizzle Friday
night into Saturday morning.
