With 30 Days Left, Claimants Urged to Submit Notice of Loss by December 20

SANTA FE, N.M. — The FEMA Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office (“Claims Office”) reminds individuals, businesses, and nonprofits affected by the 2022 Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire (“fire”) and subsequent flooding that there are 30 days left to start and submit a Notice of Loss (NOL). The December 20, 2024, deadline is the last day to begin the claims process.

Submitting an NOL is quick and simple—taking less than 20 minutes—and ensures your claim is in the system. Claimants do not have to provide supporting documentation when submitting an NOL. Claims will continue to be processed and paid out after Dec. 20. However, the deadline to begin a claim remains firm and will only change if Congress extends it.

“We are committed to ensuring everyone impacted by the Fire has the opportunity to start the claims process,” said Jay Mitchell, FEMA Director of Operations for the New Mexico Joint Recovery Office. “This is about our community and protecting its future for generations to come. Filing an NOL is the first step, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.”

The Claims Office Advocate Team is hosting three events this week to help claimants complete and submit NOLs, upload documentation, and receive one-on-one assistance. Upcoming events include:

  • Watrous Mobile Connects: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. MT Watrous Volunteer Fire Station, 202 Concord Street, Watrous, NM 87753
  • Las Vegas Probate Workshop: Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2 p.m.–6 p.m. MT Highlands University Lora Shields Building Room 265, 806 National Avenue, Las Vegas NM 87701
  • Truchas Mobile Connects: Saturday, Nov. 23, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. MT Truchas Post Office, 10 County Road 75, Truchas, NM 87578

Additionally, separate specialized claims teams are available to assist businesses, nonprofits, and houses of worship, ensuring claims are routed and prioritized appropriately.

The Claims Office is also offering a five-year National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy at no-cost to eligible claimants who submit an NOL by Dec. 20. Current claimants can add this no-cost flood insurance to their existing claim and do not have to start or submit a new NOL.

NOLs can be submitted in person at a Claims Office, by email, or by mail. NOLs can be downloaded from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon website or can be picked up at a Claims Office. Locations and hours can be found at www.fema.gov/hermits-peak/contact-us. If you have questions, call the Claims Office Helpline, 24/7 at (505) 995-7133. Representatives are available 7:30 a.m.– 5p.m. MT, Monday through Thursday. You can leave a voicemail at any time, and your call will be returned during regular business hours.

Don’t wait—submit and start your NOL today to begin your recovery journey and secure peace of mind during the holiday season.
