Winter Storm Warning issued January 12 at 2:55PM AKST until January 14 at 6:00AM AKST by NWS Juneau AK

…HEAVY SNOW FOR THE KLONDIKE HIGHWAY FROM TWO SYSTEMS…

.A front advancing from the west will bring a surge of moisture
reaching up to the Klondike Highway. Cooler temperatures aloft
will keep precipitation as snow. Precipitation diminishes during a
lull Monday morning, before another system arrives Monday
afternoon into Monday evening. This next system will bring heavier
snow, with most accumulation happening along the Klondike and
Haines Highways, though a brief period of snow may be possible for
the towns of Skagway and Haines during the afternoon and early
evening hours. Warming temperatures Monday night along the
Highways will result in diminishing snowfall accumulations. The
system will depart on Tuesday.

* WHAT…Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8
inches with the first system along the Highway, followed by 5 to
11 inches with the second system. Winds gusting as high as 50
mph.

* WHERE…Municipality of Skagway, specifically the higher
elevations along the Klondike Highway.

* WHEN…Until 6 AM AKST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS…Travel will be difficult.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…The heaviest snowfall for the first system
will occur around White Pass with heaviest snowfall rates in the
evening with rates up to 1 inch per hour. Lighter snow expected
after midnight. Near sea level, precipitation will remain as
rain. The second system will likewise see most snow accumulation
happening near White Pass, though there may be a brief period of
snow in Skagway.
