The following message is transmitted at the request of the Taos
Avalanche Center.
The Taos Avalanche Center in Taos has issued a Backcountry
Avalanche Warning.
* WHAT…The avalanche danger is high today. Two or more feet of
snow will fall in the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains by
Saturday morning, accompanied by strong winds. Very dangerous
avalanche conditions will develop quickly today as the storm
progresses.
* WHERE…Wheeler Peak Wilderness & Columbine Hondo Wilderness
above 9,000 feet. This does not include ski areas where
avalanche hazard reduction measures are performed.
* WHEN…In effect from 5 AM MST today to 6 AM MST Saturday.
* IMPACTS…Heavy snowfall and winds today will create widespread
areas of instability. Both human-triggered and natural
avalanches are very likely and avalanches large enough to bury
or injure a person are expected. Stay off of and beneath slopes
steeper than 30 degrees.
