The following message is transmitted at the request of the
Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center.
…THE CHUGACH NATIONAL FOREST AVALANCHE INFORMATION CENTER HAS
ISSUED AN AVALANCHE WARNING FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS: GIRDWOOD,
PORTAGE, WHITTIER, AND TURNAGAIN PASS FROM FRIDAY APRIL 4 AT 5:00
PM TO SATURDAY APRIL 5 AT 5:00 PM…
* WHAT…The backcountry avalanche danger is HIGH. Very dangerous
avalanche conditions exist.
* WHERE…For the Western Chugach and Kenai Mountains in and
around Girdwood, Portage Valley, Whittier, and Turnagain Pass.
* WHEN…In effect from Friday 5:00 PM AKST through Saturday 5:00
PM AKST.
* IMPACTS…Heavy rain and snow will overload an already unstable
snowpack. Both human triggered and natural large avalanches are
likely. Avalanche debris could run into valley bottoms.
Avalanche conditions will remain very dangerous immediately
after the storm is over.
* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…Traveling in or below
avalanche terrain is NOT recommended. Debris from avalanches
above may run to valley bottoms and into snow-free zones
impacting hiking trails in avalanche paths.
Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the
coverage area of this or any avalanche center.
