Special Weather Statement issued December 7 at 2:57PM AKST by NWS Anchorage AK

A strong low pressure system south of the Aleutians and its associated front will move northward into Southwest Alaska by early Sunday morning. Precipitation will initially fall as snow, but rapidly warming temperatures could allow for a brief period of freezing rain before transitioning to all rain. As the front lifts from south to north, the greatest chance for freezing rain will be Sunday morning for Bristol Bay, and from late Sunday morning through Sunday evening for the Kuskokwim Delta and Lower Kuskokwim Valley regions. Temperatures are expected to warm above freezing by Sunday night and allow precipitation to change

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches, mainly for elevations above 1000 feet. * WHERE...Schoharie County. * WHEN...Until 1 AM EST Saturday. * IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Rain will mix with and then change to snow tonight and continue into Friday afternoon before tapering off.

Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches for elevations above 1500 feet with locally higher amounts. * WHERE...Western Greene and Western Ulster Counties. * WHEN...Until 1 AM EST Saturday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The weight of the snow could lead to downed trees and power lines. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Rain will mix with and then change to snow tonight and continue through Friday. Periods of snow are expected across lower elevations as well with amounts generally 5 inches or less.
