U.S. production of all types of coal has declined over the past two decades
In 2023, the United States produced 578 million short tons (MMst) of coal, or less than half of the amount produced in 2008 when U.S. coal production peaked, according to our most recent Annual Coal Report. The production decline is spread almost evenly across each type of coal and continued in 2024. Rising mining costs, increasingly stringent environmental regulations, and competition from other sources of electric power generation have contributed to domestic coal production declines.
U.S. nuclear generators import nearly all the uranium concentrate they use
In 2023, U.S. nuclear generators used 32 million pounds of imported uranium concentrate (U3O8) and only 0.05 million pounds of domestically produced U3O8. Imports accounted for 99% of the U3O8 they used in 2023 to make nuclear fuel. Foreign producers predominantly supply the U.S. front-end nuclear fuel cycle, but federal policies have been implemented recently to build out the domestic U.S. nuclear fuel supply chain. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently received $2.7 billion in congressional funding to help revive domestic fuel production for commercial nuclear power plants.

I got to know “The Gunslinger” at a world-famous aviation simulator training school. He sauntered into my multi-engine instrument refresher class, sporting aviator sunglasses and a white flying scarf tied skillfully around his neck. His ten-gallon cowboy hat boasted a snug fit. He packed a six-gun, pearl-handled attitude. He had come, to once again, tame the piston twin. The Gunslinger’s approach to engine failures was the “draw fast and shoot method.” His goal was to complete the process of: fly the airplane, identify, verify, feather and secure the failing engine in under four seconds. He was fast, but not accurate.
