Forty years ago, when I was a fearful student pilot, my instructor, Jim, had a great teaching technique. It added fresh air to the stuffy cockpit and a new approach to demonstrating and recovering from power-off stalls. Many pilots tolerate stalls with anxiety, perspiration, eyes closed and a face set for impending death.  Often the pilot does not breathe until the stall is complete; possibly thinking that might somehow prohibit losing control.  Stalls are too often misunderstood and associated with unmanageable danger in the minds of most students. California law and refinery closure reflect ongoing challenges for the state’s fuel market

On October 14, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed bill Abx2-1 into law, empowering California regulators to set and adjust minimum petroleum product inventory levels for refiners in the state, in part to address the state’s fuel price volatility. Shortly after, refiner Phillips 66 announced plans to close its Wilmington refinery in Los Angeles by the end of 2025, citing uncertainty surrounding the long-term sustainability of the refinery.

The Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) Initiative

On October 1, 2016 airports in the United States began using new reporting terminology to describe contaminated paved runways in both Field Condition Notices to Airmen (FICON NOTAMs) and on Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) messages per the Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) initiative. Under TALPA, Mu (friction) values are no longer provided to pilots.  Instead, a three-digit Runway Condition Code (RwyCC) is assigned to paved runways whose surfaces are more than 25% covered by:  water, frost, snow, slush, and/or ice.   Similar to Mu values, a RwyCC is assigned to each third of a contaminated runway (i.e. touchdown, midpoint

HIGH-DENSITY, MILITARY STUDENT TRAINING BETWEEN MOBILE, AL AND PENSACOLA, FL 6/8/16   Use caution for high-density, high-performance, military student training in the vicinity of NFD NOLF (Summerdale Navy Outlying Field), NBJ NOLF (Barin Navy Outlying Field), 5R4 (Foley Municipal Airport, Foley, Alabama), and JKA (Jack Edwards Airport, Gulf Shores, Alabama).  Summerdale Navy Outlying Field (NFD NOLF) re-opened on 3/9/16.   These four, uncontrolled airports all lie within a 7 NM radius, and are located halfway between Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida.  This 7 NM radius is just west of the “inner ring” of the Pensacola Naval Air Station’s (NPA) Class

Know where training aircraft practice in Utah and more!

A group of Utah flight schools has come together to form the Utah Flight Training Consortium. Our goal is to promote safety in our own back yard in a rapidly growing flight training environment. One of the first products produced by the group is an interactive Google map that allows pilots to see where each school has established practice areas in order to increase situational awareness and decrease the likelihood of an accident. The website also features a monthly safety article which is written by one of the safety team or by a student at one of the schools. Please
