At 429 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms over White Plains, or near Mount Airy, moving east at 40 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Mount Airy... At 432 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of thunderstorms over Baldwin, or near West Jefferson, moving northeast at 15 mph. These storms may track over the same area, creating localize flooding. HAZARD...Up to an inch of rain. Wind may gusts up to 40 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Localized flooding in low lying areas and ponding of water on roadways. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Sparta... Jefferson... West Jefferson... Laurel Springs... Glendale Springs... Fleetwood... and Baldwin.

Be alert to poor visibilities along the ridges from Roanoke to Boone this afternoon. Visibilities at times will be under a quarter mile. This is especially true along the Blue Ridge Parkway, I-77 and US 52 between Wytheville and the North Carolina border, and US 221 between Jefferson and Floyd. Those traveling these routes should allow more time to get to your destination and use your headlights.

The combination of dry fuels, S-SW winds of 10 to 15 mph gusting to around 25 to 30 mph Saturday afternoon, and relative humidity values dropping to 30 to 35 percent will result in an increased fire danger threat for areas east of the Blue Ridge, and North Carolina where a burn ban is currently in effect. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn, use extreme caution since fires can quickly grow out of control under these conditions.

Relative humidity values between 25 and 30 percent are expected this afternoon. Winds look to be slightly more elevated today, with sustained winds around 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph at times. That combined with very dry fuels will result in an increased fire danger. The North Carolina Forest Service has issued a statewide ban on all open burning until further notice, and all burning permits have been cancelled. Residents with questions can contact their NC Forest Service county ranger or their county fire marshal's office.
