ESFLOT Favorable conditions for river ice development and possible ice jams are expected from today through at least Thursday, impacting the Rock, Fox, Des Plaines, and Kankakee river basins. Very cold temperatures which have moved into the region today, combined with an extended period of below freezing weather over the last few weeks, will make conditions favorable for the rapid formation of river ice on area rivers and tributaries. A narrow but brief band of heavy snow will move across Newton and Jasper counties through noon CST. Though the band of snow will last for 15 minutes or less at any given location, visibility will fall under one half mile and winds will gust as high as 30 mph. Prepare for rapidly changing conditions if traveling in the area late this morning.

Snow of varying intensity is expected to continue this morning, particularly near and south of a Chicago to Ottawa line, including northwest Indiana. Some occasional heavier bursts of snow are expected. Untreated roads will be snow covered and travel hazardous. Snow accumulations will generally total a half inch to an inch and a half by the time the snow tapers off and ends by midday. If heading out this morning, leave extra time to reach your destination and practice safe winter driving.

Light snow is expected across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana late tonight into Friday, mainly east of a Woodstock-to- Amboy line. Snow is expected to affect the Friday morning commute and with temperatures below freezing, untreated roads will likely be snow covered. Total accumulations around an inch or two are expected across much of the Chicago metro area, with upwards of three inches possible south of I-80. Expect slick travel and reduced visibilities during the day tomorrow, especially during the morning, and allow for extra travel time.
