Above-average hurricane activity disrupted U.S. energy infrastructure in 2024

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which ran from June 1 through November 30, exhibited above-average activity with more named storms and hurricanes than usual, including several that disrupted U.S. energy infrastructure, primarily on the Gulf Coast and in the Southeast. Energy impacts from hurricanes this season were most notable in electricity markets, although Hurricanes Francine, Helene, and Rafael forced some oil and natural gas production from fields in the Gulf of Mexico to be shut in.

According to our November 2024 report, preliminary estimates indicate that the transportation sector accounted for 74% of total U.S. petroleum consumption in August 2024. The industrial sector accounted for 23%, the commercial sector for 2%, the residential sector for 1%, and the electric power sector for less than 1%.

Short-Term Energy Outlook

(Wed, 13 Nov 2024) Global oil consumption. India has emerged as the leading source of growth in global oil consumption in our forecast. Over 2024 and 2025, India accounts for 25% of total oil consumption growth globally. We expect an increase of 1.0 million barrels per day (b/d) in global consumption of liquid fuels in 2024. We expect even more growth next year, with global oil consumption rising by 1.2 million b/d.
