The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services is continuing an Air Quality Alert for fine particulates for Horry County in South Carolina until further notice. An Air Quality Alert means that the fine particulate concentrations within the specified areas may approach or exceed unhealthy standards due to local wildfire smoke in the Myrtle Beach area. High pressure over the Southeast U.S. will continue to dominate the region into the weekend, minimizing smoke dispersion from numerous wildfires in the area. The combination of west to northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 25 to 35 mph, relative humidity values dropping as low as 25 to 30 percent, and dry fuels will contribute to an elevated risk for fire spread today across portions of the Mid Hudson Valley, including eastern Ulster and all of Dutchess Counties. A line of snow showers along a cold front will produce localized snow squall conditions with visibility below a half mile and wind gusts to 30 mph. This line will drop quickly southward through 445 AM, moving across Interstate 90 from Batavia to Syracuse. The heavy snow will last less than an hour in most locations, with snowfall rates of an inch per hour. Those traveling during the early morning hours should be prepared for rapidly deteriorating visibility as this weather moves through.
