Special Weather Statement issued April 8 at 3:37PM AKDT by NWS Fairbanks AK

A strong shortwave will move north over the Alaska Range this evening through Wednesday bringing locally heavy snow showers and gusty southerly winds. Areas along the Richardson Highway south of Delta Junction can expect wind gusts up to 50 mph during the day on Wednesday, and areas south of Healy along the Parks Highway may reach 40 mph. Snow showers combined with gusty winds may result in rapid changes in visibility and driving conditions. Another round of gusty southerly winds are expected April 12th through April 14th. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. * WHERE...St Lawrence Island. * WHEN...From 3 AM to 7 PM AKDT Monday. * IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strongest northeast winds are expected around midday and will persist through the afternoon before weakening during the evening. Falling snow combined with wind will result in visibility as low as one-half mile at times.

Kaktovik will see westerly winds continue to increase through the night with gusts of 30 to 35 mph possible near the peak 3 am through 11 am. Snow showers increase overnight with accumulations around 2 inches. While snowing, blowing snow will reduce visibility to half a mile or less at times. Visibility will recover between 7 and 9 am as snow showers diminish. A few showers may linger after 9am, but they will be more brief with visibility reductions significantly less likely.

A light wintry mix of wet snow, fog, and mist transitions to snow showers and blustery southwest winds behind a cold front late tonight. Near gale-force southwesterly winds behind this front may push water through cracks in the ice, flooding shorefast ice by Wednesday morning. - Additional snow accumulations of 1-3 inches and a light glaze of ice are expected by Wednesday morning with little accumulation afterwards.
