Poor air quality has expanded across portions of Illinois and Indiana this afternoon due to Canadian wildfire smoke. This has led particulate levels to increase above the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category of the EPA Air Quality Index. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has extended the Air Pollution Action Day for the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area and IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT FRIDAY NIGHT. A Chicago area "Air Pollution Action Day" is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) category of the Air Quality Index for multiple days. Wildfire smoke is expected to continue to have an impact on particulate levels with daily 24 hour AQI forecasts at USG or higher through Friday. USG category - Active

The officials at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have declared Air Quality Action Days, in effect for Thursday June 5 and Friday June 6. Air Quality Action Days for PM 2.5 have been issued through Friday, mainly due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. The associated fine particulate levels are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range.
