Although relative humidity values will be higher Tuesday, winds will be much stronger during the afternoon and evening hours. Minimum afternoon relative humidity values ranging from 30 to around 40 percent will be common across the area, and winds will strengthen from the south and southeast to 10 to 25 mph with gusts in excess of 35 mph possible. Some locations especially over the Plateau and the southern and central Tennessee Valleys will see gusts in excess of 40 mph by late in the day. These conditions combined with the recent days of strong drying will produce elevated fire danger

Dry surface conditions and gusty southwest winds this afternoon will continue pose an increased threat for fire danger conditions for East Tennessee and southwest North Carolina. The risk for fire danger conditions will continue on Saturday. Relative humidity will drop to 25 to 35 percent Saturday afternoon, with wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph expected. Another storm system will move across the region late tonight and Thursday morning bringing with it scattered snow showers. Additional snow accumulations of 1/2 inch are expected, possibly locally higher across the Plateau counties. Also, the melting snow will refreeze tonight as very cold air moves into the region. Patchy areas of black ice are expected. Some slick travel conditions are possible, especially during the morning commute Thursday. If traveling, allow extra time to reach your destination. Keep extra space between you and other vehicles. Drive with caution and slow down.
