Rain and Snow mix is changing to snow in many locations across the Central Highlands into Northern Maine. Snowfall is becoming moderate to heavy at times in some locations. Despite air temperatures slightly above freezing the road subsurface temperatures are below freezing. As the sun continues to go down expecting roads to cool and result in slippery driving conditions especially across the higher terrain. At 400 PM Maine State Police Houlton have advised some roads across Aroostook County are becoming slick and will require treatment. WHAT...Breezy south winds sustained at 20 to 25 mph and gusting 25 to 40 mph, dry vegetation, and relative humidities less than 40 percent will lead to elevated fire danger starting this afternoon. WHERE...All of central Iowa, but especially west and north WHEN...During the afternoon and early evening hours. IMPACTS...Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly. PREPAREDNESS AND PRECAUTIONARY ACTIONS...Burning is discouraged under these conditions. A strong weather front moving into the Alaska Panhandle Saturday night into Sunday brings increased potential for accumulating snow to the upper elevations of the Klondike Highway and White Pass. Current forecast snowfall accumulations up to 6 inches over 24 hours are possible, however forecast confidence remains low. Due to rising snow levels and warming temperatures accompanying the heavy precipitation rates there will likely be a mix of snow and rain which would keep snow totals lower. Wet snow will fall moderately to even briefly heavily through 8 - 10am this morning resulting in reducued visibilities. While the majority of the wet snow accumulaitons ranging from 1 to 3 inches will mainly occur on cooler and grassy surfaces, a slushy coating may even accumulate on roads and walkways during any heavier periods of snow. Drive carefully through this morning and allow extra travel time.
