Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.

For the High Rip Risk, north and east-facing reefs. * WHEN...Until 4 PM ChST Saturday. * IMPACTS...Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A pulse of northerly swell, in combination with northeasterly trade swell, has brought hazardous surf to north-facing reefs and a high risk of rip currents to north and east-facing reefs.

* WHAT...Large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet. * WHERE...North facing reefs of Pohnpei. * WHEN...From 3 PM Thursday to 3 PM ChST Sunday. * IMPACTS...Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A large, long-period north swell will move into Pohnpei Thursday night causing surf to become hazardous along north facing reefs. With the full moon around Friday, high tides will be higher than normal which may result in some minor wave splash up in low lying areas of northern shores.

However, as early as Thursday night, a large north swell will build into the region and could bring hazardous surf to north facing reefs then.
