Dave Strassburg selected as the 2021 Certificated Flight Instructor of the Year for the Eastern US!

It is my pleasure to announce that the General Aviation Awards Committee has selected Dave Strassburg as the Eastern Regional Flight Instructor of the Year for 2021. This is the second year in a row that Dave has been selected as a regional award winner. Last year he was selected by the committee for the category of Safety Representative of the Year for the Eastern US. The award committee is made up of recognized aviation professionals that have made contributions to the general aviation community.  You can find out more about the judges here (you might recognize some of these folks!). http://www.generalaviationawards.com/judges/

Volcano Watch — What sounds the (automated) alarms at HVO?

Volcano Watch  is a weekly article and activity update written by U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists and affiliates.  Example plots of STA/LTA alarm on infrasound data for four possible alarm scenarios. A shows detection of a real eruption, B shows a false detection of non-volcanic change, C shows failure to detect a real eruption amid noisy data, and D shows no detection of any event of interest. Because it can be very expensive to have scientists watch the volcano data streams on a 24-hour basis, HVO computers are ‘trained’ to look for activity and alert when the volcano

Maintenance Safety Tip – The “B” Nut can be Deadly

The “B” Nut can be Deadly All aircraft maintainers have heard or used the term “B” nut.  It is the common description of the nut that is used to connect fluid lines and hoses. It is a very simple component; but does a critical job. It provides a reliable seal in plumbing systems and usually results in ease of maintenance for AMTs. It is designed to provide years of reliable service. However, “B” nut reliability is only as good as how you treat it. We disconnect and connect them many times during our careers - right? However, do you “tighten”

NTSB Safety Alert: Mechanics, The “B” Nut can be Deadly!

"B-nut" is a common term for a nut that provides the clamping force to create a reliable seal in lines (fuel, oil, or air, lines on a reciprocating or turbine engine) installed on an aircraft. If a B-nut is improperly secured (either torqued too much or not enough), a loss of engine power or an engine fire could result. Under- and over-torqued B-nuts could cause fuel, oil, or air leaks depending on where the B-nuts are installed; over-torqued B-nuts could also result in deformation and damage to a line. Fuel or oil leaked onto a hot engine could result in
