HAZARD...Waterspouts and wind gusts to 40 knots. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Waterspouts can quickly form and capsize boats...damage vessels and oil rigs...and create suddenly higher waves. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.

A strong low pressure system with an associated cold front will bring strong winds, large seas, and the potential for strong thunderstorms to the coastal waters beginning Thursday morning. Any thunderstorm that forms will be capable of producing erratic, locally gale force winds and rough seas, dangerous lightning, heavy rainfall with reduced visibility, and waterspouts. The cold front passage will bring widespread southwest gale force winds for the northern coastal waters. Local gale force gusts are expected over the remaining waters prior to the frontal passage. Seas will also increase significantly, ranging from 10 to 18 feet for the waters

This thunderstorm was located 11 nm southeast of Chandeleur Sound, moving northeast at 35 knots.

Southwest winds will increase to 20 to 30 knots by late this morning and continue through much of tonight. These strong offshore winds, combined with milder air temperatures in the low to mid 30s, could cause ice floes to break off from the shoreline. Anyone caught on the ice if this occurs would become stranded. It is strongly advised to stay off the ice today and tonight.

Single digit temperatures are occurring over Lake Erie this morning and will continue through this afternoon. Water temperatures in the central basin are near 33 degrees. Rapid ice growth is occurring and could close shipping channels on Lake Erie. Vessels traveling through Lake Erie should be aware of the potential for rapid ice growth. Plan accordingly to avoid enclosure in the ice.
